Common Name – Blue-flowered xiphidium

Botanical Name – Xiphidium caeruleum Aubl.

Family Name – Haemodoraceae

Habitat – Native to Central and South America, including countries like Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. It is typically found in wet forests, along streams, riverbanks, and other moist areas.

Habit – Perennial herbaceous plant, can grow to about 1-2 meters in height and clumping habit with erect stems.

Stem– Herbaceous, not woody, and typically green and smooth.

Leaves – Alternate, elongated, lanceolate, can grow up to 20-30 cm in length, smooth and have a glossy appearance and bright green.

Inflorescence – The flowers are arranged in a raceme. The inflorescence arises from the top of the stems.

Flower – Small, egg-shaped flower buds give rise to white, tubular flowers that hang down and open slightly at the tip. Plants produce a spike-like inflorescence under full sun, but a branched inflorescence under semi-shade.

Fruit – Capsule is small.

Flowering and Fruiting Time – Flowering time from May to October and fruiting time from June to November.

Usage – Cultivated as an ornamental plant.
