Botanical Name – Cestrum nocturnum L.

Family Name – Solanaceae

Habitat – Native to the West Indies, and naturalized in South Asia.

Habit – Evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow up to 4 meters

Stem– Smooth and greenish to light brown. As the plant ages, the bark may become slightly fissured or roughened.

Leaves – Simple, alternate, and ovate to lanceolate in shape. They are typically 6-12 cm (2.4-4.7 inches) long and 2-4 cm (0.8-1.6 inches) wide.

Inflorescence – Clusters of tubular flowers. These clusters, or cymes, are usually found at the axils of the leaves or at the tips of the branches. Each cyme contains multiple flowers, which are densely packed together.

Flower – Small, tubular, and greenish-white to yellowish in color. They are highly fragrant, especially at night, which attracts nocturnal pollinators such as moths. Each flower is about 2.5-3 cm (1-1.2 inches) long with a narrow tube that flares out into five lobes at the mouth.

Fruit – A small, berry-like structure known as a drupe. The drupes are initially green but turn white or whitish-green when mature. The seeds of Cestrum nocturne are small, round to oval, and smooth

Flowering and Fruiting Time – Flowering time from March to October and fruiting time from May to December.

Usage – Cultivated as an ornamental plant.
