Myanmar Name – Mahogani

Common Name – Mahogany, Big-leaf mahogany, Meze

Botanical Name – Swietenia macrophylla King

Family Name – Meliaceae

Habitat – Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is found in regions with a tropical climate, including countries like Mexico, Central America, the Amazon basin, and parts of South America.

Habit – Large, deciduous tree that can reach heights of up to 40-50 meters (130-165 feet and has  a straight, tall trunk and a rounded crown and , DBH can range from approximately 30 to 100 centimeters (12 to 40 inches) or more.

Bark – Grayish-brown and relatively smooth ,fissured and rough.

Leaves – Compound and pinnate, typically consisting of 2-4 pairs of leaflets and one terminal leaflet, large, about 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) in length, and are arranged in an opposite pattern on the stem and the leaves are dark green.

Inflorescence – Clusters of small, greenish-white to yellowish flowers, arranged in panicles or clusters at the tips of the branches.

Flower – Unisexual, small, typically less than 1 cm in diameter and  have five petals.

Fruit – Large, woody capsule, typically oval or pear-shaped, and it can be up to 20-40 cm (8-16 inches) in length. When mature, the fruit splits open, revealing numerous winged seeds. The fruit turns from green to brown when it ripens.

Seed – Small, flat, and winged, can reach 7 to 12 cm long.

Flowering and Fruiting Time – Flowering time from January to April and fruiting time from May to September.
